Debbie
Parker
Debbie’s
love of the Australian landscape and it’s
natural forms gives her an inexhaustible variety of subjects for
her paintings. She is able to invest an ordinary observation with
emotional power and extend its presence into the viewer's field
of perception. Debbie creates hauntingly beautiful renderings
of
the visible world
that are interpretations of the feelings she has about what she
sees. Couple that with a love of colour and an energetic method
of rendering and you have a truly unique way of experiencing the
landscape.
Her formal training in painting and other media was undertaken
in Canberra and in Brisbane but she is predominantly self taught.
Debbie has exhibited in Sydney and Canberra before moving back
home to Brisbane in 1994. After a break in her Art Practice she
has recommenced exhibiting in Brisbane.
Debbie’s
images are essentially Australian landscape designs taken from
experiencing the site and then interpreting the landscape
or natural form with a poetic mystery that takes it beyond
natural appearances. She uses a stark graphic interpretation
of reduced
representational forms and amplified intense colour relationships
to achieve these striking forms that accentuate light
and natural design. This enables Debbie to emphasize an aspect
of the view that is most important. This could be the light
play of the vertical lines in a stand of gums or the texture
of a burnt
tree trunk.
This is a multi layered approach where each deliberate or random
mark or plain of colour is evaluated to be exploited to its
full extent and then woven into a representational image, that
simply
suggests of the source of the inspiration. Parts of each layer
of working are visible in the finished piece and show the evolution
of the working process.
Water effects play an important part in her interpretation
of natural subjects added with impasto to give a tactile
aspect that is so
important in the visual story. Transparency is used to give
luminosity
and vibrancy adding value to the energy of her “Expressionist” representation
of natural forms.
